temporarily out of place
Treehouse NDSM | (Treehouse NDSM)
Dates: 13 Nov- 7 Dec 2025 Times: Thursday to Sunday 13h to 18h Opening on Thursday 13 Nov at 18h?
Treehouse NDSM’s new exhibition invites you to explore what sustainability means beyond the reuse of materials and objects. Open from 13 November until 7 December!Sustainability and circularity may sound like well-worn concepts by now.
Yet in Temporarily Out of Place, ten artists at Treehouse NDSM show that sustainability goes far beyond the reuse of materials and objects. Creating a more sustainable world requires us to re-examine the systems, habits, and assumptions that shape our daily lives.?
Curated by Marije Remigius (founder of Circu Leren) and Mulan Go (artistic coordinator at Treehouse NDSM), the exhibition presents works that critically address the excesses of our current consumer society.?
In Helen Flanagan’s absurdist video Gestures of Matter, the culture of overconsumption—embodied in “all you can eat” buffets and extreme dieting, is dissected under the harsh fluorescent light of a roadside restaurant.?For her project Made In, Nawon Koo investigates the hidden labour behind everyday products manufactured in so-called “low-wage countries.” By redesigning the casing of a Philips OneBlade razor (produced in Indonesia), she proposes a sustainable alternative.?Meanwhile, Nesie Junyi Wang's video documents miners in China who tend to small gardens beside extraction sites. As the miners describe the environmental transformations around them, Junyi reflects on our shared complicity: while we may view them as part of the problem, we too benefit from the minerals they extract. Accompanying the video, Junyi presents a series of copper plates etched with images from these miners’ gardens.Temporarily Out of Place features works by Gabriele Bonomi, Jonat Deelstra, Jean Danton Laffert, Helen Flanagan, KIEM & Imke Hullmann, Nesie Junyi, Nawon Koo, Rucha Kulkarni, Philip Ling, and Baroeg Mulder. This exhibition is made possible with the support of the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and the Cirrcus Foundation.?
