Solo expo - Negative Space
Kashyap Krishna | (Enschede)
For his first solo exhibition, Kashyap Krishna (India, 1990) invites you into a space of negativity filled with suffering, anger, confusion and acceptance.
In art and design, negative space refers to the empty space around a subject in an image. In Negative Space the subject exists simultaneously as, and surrounded by, the negative space. This contradiction is a reflection of an inherent tension in human existence. Virtuous behaviour posits a clean conscience against an immoral world. Emotions well up on the inside while the world remains indifferent. As an exploration of negative states of being and the vagaries of negative beings in states, the negative space can be found either within or without the subject.
The subject under scrutiny is N01 (pronounced “no one”), a symbol, a memetic facsimile derived from the body of the author. Every instance of N01 is consequently a self-portrait.
Across three sections of space - The World, My Life, & Death - morality, politics and spirituality are explored using ambiguity and wit to uncover the absurdity of it all.
One enters The World and says ??????? (Namask?ra) to what is. While the ubiquitous ugliness is beyond repulsion, one has to find a way to meander through the misery.
In N01 at home a faint light is shed into My Life. Using a mirror as a reflexive tool, the sculptural painting U R N01 brings one into the work; coercing the one looking up to reflect on the proposition.
& Death deliberates over the available options while recognising the inevitable. In the darkness beyond one is Alone.
N01 invites you to explore this space and acknowledge the negative.
