At Unruly Gallery Henny Overbeek will present a new series of thirteen pen drawings. Overbeek’s work looks fresh with edgy colors and compositions. Sometimes bizarre, sometimes surrealistic, but always balanced and calculated - the work of a craftsman.

Fuelled by a big personal archive of photos and raw material, the new drawings bring together the use of collective techniques with collective memory. ‘How Do You Doodle?’ shows new works made of archival material, sandpapered and washed in with ballpoint. The use of the basic ballpoint pen and the common gesture of doodling, illustrate the non-hierarchical approach of visual consciousness and techniques.

Overbeek plays with clashing concepts of the collective, of media and social norms. Often the forefront of the works are politically charged moments of our recent history, sometimes ‘dumbified’, sometimes made into icons.

His work is a balanced melting pot of images and meanings, forming a world where obscure rituals go hand in hand with religion, art and language. From silkscreen and painting to collage and publishing, the work lays bare the assumed gap between established art and elements of (non)western visual culture and trivia. Materials and their connotations are of equal importance as the images merged into one work, leaving space for humour and absurdism.
