This painting is an impression of the cathedral in Hull (England) that Bert visited in May 2023. In the cathedral, a group of ladies were in conclave.
Hull Cathedral, also known as Holy Trinity Church, is a well-preserved medieval church with a huge nave and impressive facade. Very special in the church are the beautiful stained glass windows. One of them can be seen in the background in the painting. It depicts biblical scenes and the sunlight that streams in through the stained-glass windows bathes the interior in a colorful light.
In 2017 the church was granted cathedral status and renamed Hull Minster. Hull Minster is the parish church of Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is the largest parish church in England by floor area. Dating from about 1300, the church is widely believed to have some of the finest medieval stonework in the country, particularly in the aisles.
In November 2014, plans were unveiled to refurbish the church to create a venue for performances, exhibitions and banquets, a destination for visitors and a place for those in need to find help. The aim is to create a place for the whole community, and a location that will be a driving force in the rebuilding of Hull's Old Town. The transformation, costing a total of £4.5 million, is taking place in stages from 2016, the first being completed for Hull's role as the UK's City of Culture in 2017. The group of knitting ladies in conclave, as featured on the painting, therefore fits perfectly with the new function of the church.
