View through window castle Sully (2021)
Oil on panel
50 x 70 cm

Bert made this painting after a visit to the castle of Sully sur Loire during his stay with friends in Clémont in October 2021. The painting shows the view from a double window on the third floor of the castle. Two pigeons sit on the windowsill in front of the window.
The Castle of Sully-sur-Loire (French: Château Sully sur Loire) is one of the castles of the Loire, in the commune of Sully-sur-Loire. It was built at the end of the 14th century, on a site that has been one of the rare crossings of the Loire since the Gallo-Roman period. Its most famous owner was Maximilian de Béthune (1599-1641), First Duke of Sully and Grand Minister of King Henry IV of France. He also ordered the design of the castle gardens, the enlargement and restoration of the castle and the construction of dikes against the city's flooding.
In 1918 part of the castle was lost due to a fire, so that part was rebuilt in 1922-1923 in a different style.
The Château de Sully-sur-Loire has been owned by the family for four centuries, registered as a monument since 1928 and owned by the department of Loiret since 1962.
