Doors Rotterdam (2021)
Oil on canvas
40 x 80 cm

This painting is a six-panel (hexaptych) of doors in Rotterdam. It shows special front doors of buildings and houses in Rotterdam.

The door of Kuijl's Fundatie is depicted at the top left. The courtyard of Kuijl's Fundatie is a courtyard that was built in 1972. The court is located on the 's-Gravenweg in the Rotterdam district of Kralingen. The courtyard was previously located on the Schiekade. The courtyard is one of the three courtyards still present in Rotterdam. In 1815 the original courtyard on the Schiekade was realized. The courtyard was hit by a bomb during the Second World War. In 1972 it was rebuilt on the Vredenoord estate in Kralingen. The original main building was demolished brick by brick and rebuilt on the 's-Gravenweg. The main building now serves as a wedding venue and is also used for various other events. It has been a national monument since 1973.

The front door and part of the facade on the left in the middle is of the house 's Gravenweg 154 in Rotterdam: country house "Buitenzorg". Buitenzorg is one of the smallest preserved outdoor houses on the 's-Gravenweg in Kralingen. The current house was built around 1775 in a simple Louis XVI style. In the symmetrically arranged facade, only the centrally located entrance and the window above were provided with a decorative frame.

The front door and facade of the house in the center right panel is from Avenue Concordia 79. The house was built in 1895. Before the Second World War, the Jewish people Lion van Danzig and Sophie Speelman lived here with their daughters. During the war this property was expropriated and forcibly sold on 1 May 1944.

The door on the lower left panel is from the building at 25 Hoflaan in Rotterdam. The Hoflaan is one of the oldest streets in Kralingen. The Honingen castle was built around 1233 and the Hoflaan was the driveway from the Oudedijk to this castle.

Finally, the panel at the bottom right shows the entrance door of 'The new castle' at Slotlaan 31 in Rotterdam Kralingen.
