'High water'
Oil on canvas'
50 x 40 cm

The painting entitled 'High Water' refers to the consequences of climate change for low-lying cities such as Rotterdam. The oil painting shows the high water level in the Nieuwe Maas with the Wilhelminapier in the background.
In July 2021, large parts of Limburg were affected by heavy rainfall and flooding. Parts of Belgium and Germany were also flooded, resulting in extensive damage and loss of life. This was an extreme and unparalleled event with enormous impact. Entire houses were carried along by the water, as can be seen in the painting, and even people were carried along on wooden rafts. In the middle of the Nieuwe Maas, a person in the painting waves for help in the distance.
The threatening sky in the background shows the danger that threatens humanity for years to come, but there is also hope. The blue sky at the top right symbolizes the hope for improvement and splashing water in the foreground shows the resistance that quays and dikes offer to the high water.
