Bert Hermans
'The Wedding-Room' (diptych)
Oil on canvas
2 x 80 x 60 cm

This painting shows the wedding hall of the town hall of Leiden. It is part of a double-hinged diptych that Bert made of the town hall. This room is seen from front to back (right) and back to front (left). Both parts are separated by a curtain that hangs in the wedding hall.
Several people can be seen in the painting. The left canvas shows Bert's daughter riding her tricycle through the wedding hall. On the right canvas, the bridal couple is sitting on the floor. These are Bert's niece and her husband who were married in the former Dutch East Indies at the time and sat there in the same pose on a veranda.
The painting on the right canvas is a variation of the photo 'View of Leiden', which was specially made by the artist, Casper Faassen, for this wedding hall. In his style, Bert has turned it into a view of Rotterdam instead of Leiden.
