In the Light of Light of Dionysos, title page of an edition of twelve giclee prints, format 54 x 41 cm, 2021

Inspired by the classical mythology of ancient Greece and in particular by Dionysos, the god of wine and ecstasy, but also of budding nature, Richard Bouwman created the edition/portfolio ‘In the Light of Dionysos’, which consists
in a series of twelve giclee prints. Through viniculture and civilisation, Dionysos brought prosperity to the world and Dionysian is everything that is moved by ecstasy and exuberance.
One notices a predominance of floral and vegetal shapes – bunches of grapes, grape leaves, the grapevine – in the prints, an imagery which in appearance refers to nature, but also to abundance, the enigmatic and the intoxicating forces of nature, sometimes showing traces of anthropomorphic forms. Many of the terms in the work refer to blue grape varieties, which are eminently suitable for viniculture. So, in a way, it is a homage to the great range of grape varieties, the source of all wine.

Jeroen Noordhoek of FotoVakPrint Rotterdam printed 25 numbered and signed copies of the edition/portfolio, on 305 g/m², 54 x 41cm, Hahnemühle 100% Cotton White Ultra Smooth Photo Rag paper. Each copy is presented in a linen-covered cardboard box, made by Roest, bookbinder’s in Rotterdam.
The boxes are numbered and signed as well.
