National ID entity project

In my work as one of the artists in BaZtille I respond to the works of art of Siegfried Kärcher. In some of his paintings he uses, what we can call, ‘typical’ image icons. To me those icons are directly connected to what in general appeals to Germany and the Germans, for instance the ‘Bratwurst’ and the emotional charge of the football (soccer) game on a national level, but also his image of capital(ism) represented in a huge bank building in Frankfurt.
The project’s name was given as a follow-up of Siegfried’s’ first stay at Ateliers BaZtille, Zoetermeer. The most characteristic element in the artwork he made then were the national symbols: the flags of Germany and the Netherlands. As I did understand there was a story connected to the use of these symbols by Siegfried and there was a certain tension laying under the surface. The story -when he came the first time to The Netherlands in 2008 - was that short before he had a special experience on a Frankfurt graveyard. He passed many graves of people who died on the same day as a result of a bombing in World war II. This bizarre idea passed his mind on his journey to Holland. He enjoyed his stay at the quest studio and it inspired him to an exhibition and an art performance together with Ryoko Maebashi, a Japans pianist, he worked with before.
On his second stay in 2010 he continued his idea of (national) identity by making a series of paintings with the national characteristics I mentioned before. Another artist in BaZtille remarked that the way Siegfried’s paintings were made were ‘typical German’ as you look to the tradition of (some) German painters: an expressionistic way of painting with a grand gesture and rough and direct brushstrokes. One can ask himself: Is this in a way about Identity too?
My response as a painter is one that consists of derivative images (Dutch tradition in painting!?). But first I must say that apart from our physical identity, the identity of a person is in my view not who that person really is, but mostly how other people characterize that person. Everyone has a kind of self-image, but rarely this image is the image others have of you. When I describe my identity as Dutchman I can use concepts that are generally known and that put me into a position to know me as such.
Back to my painting as my response in this project: I used images that are very much typical for the tradition of Dutch painting. I did not simply copy those images but they are recognizable and processed in my own style of painting. So I brought my signature together with icons of our tradition in art. It is up to the viewer to say if the whole idea of National Identity is fairly stated in my work or any of the works of this exhibition.

Wat BLIJFT Komt NOOIT Terug
27-03-2011 t/m 25-04-2011
