Bas Wouters (1964) is a contemporary Dutch painter. A selection of his work was on show in Tilburg, Zuiderwoude, Zaltbommel, Milan and Aberystwyth (Wales). In the long run it will be shown in an art gallery in New York.

He had his initial training at the Tilburg Art Academy and studied printmaking in Cardiff (UK) with American artist Tom Piper.
Back in his hometown in The Netherlands he started painting.

His journey in the quest of finding images that represent the spiritual has led Bas to painting his most recent work. Influenced by Dutch painters such as Armando, Theo Kuijpers, Roger Raveel and Marc Mulders, he considers himself to be a ‘lowland painter’ as in approaching the proces of painting being without conscious borders and applying generous layers of what could be considered as a most traditional material; oil paint on canvas.

Recent developments have seen Bas depicting animal shaped forms in his work. They are nameless representatives rather than actual existing species. In these he seems to proceed his quest to find basic images. The animals are made by applying spray paint or thinned oil paint.

"We are not above animals, we are beyond them. In my work they shape themselves, I hardly put any effort in defining them...I seem to find them. Or they seem to find me.", he said.

His paintings manifest themselves strongly because of a certain ‘to-the-point-ness’. The way they are painted makes them rather visually dramatic. But they always seem to have a hidden kind of tenderness.
They show allegories of all kind of symbols and ready made frases that are drawn with a black marker. Mostly referring to spiritual themes they all are a result of a quest of trying to find images that have an eternal meaning. In that way they are supposed to give hope. And in that same way they could be comforting. And simultaneously worrying as they refer to the inevitable transience of things. They celebrate life in all its unpredictability.
