"Doel 1"
Oil on canvas
20 x 20 cm

Bert made this painting following a visit to the town of Doel in Belgium in May 2022. It shows the cooling towers of the nuclear power plant in Doel in the background of the almost completely deserted village.
Doel was once a quiet village in the Schelde polder. Most houses have been empty for several years and the streets are full of graffiti and street art. Except for a dozen residents, the village is completely deserted. Little by little it becomes a ghost town.
In the early 1970s, Doel still had 1400 inhabitants and now only about ten. Many houses and other buildings are dilapidated,
The painting has another peculiarity. In the dark, the contours of the cooling towers and high-voltage lines are visible through the use of 'Glow in the dark' paint. With the illuminated vapor from the towers, this also enhances the image of a radiation source.
