This diptych is the outside of a painting showing the station The Hague 'Hollands Spoor'. This station has a special significance for Bert. It was in his youth the starting point of a voyage to freedom and independence. From here he traveled (without a ticket!) on the age of fifteen from The Hague to Tilburg were a new phase in his young life started. On the right and left canvases two persons are waiting for the train. It is sometimes very difficult to travel by train, because of delays trains you often have to wait for them. Hollands Spoor opened on 6 December 1843, after the Amsterdam–Haarlem railway, the oldest railway in the country, had been extended to The Hague. This line was further extended to Rotterdam in 1847. The original building was demolished in 1891 to make way for a Neo-Renaissance building designed by Dirk Margadant.
