'St. Jozef' (2019)
Oil on canvas
130 x 70 cm

This painting 'St. Jozef' gives an impression of the former St. Jozef Pavilion in Gouda, which is currently partly being demolished and partly renovated. Newspapers blow on the painting which, when viewed with a magnifying glass, tell the story of the demolition and renovation of this former hospital/orphanage.
The Sint Jozef Pavilion (founded as Sint Joseph Pavilion) is a former Roman Catholic hospital on Graaf Florisweg in the Dutch city of Gouda. In 1992 the hospital merged with the then Bleuland Hospital to form the Groene Hart Hospital. The building was maintained as Joseph's location. Since the beginning of 2014, the Sint Jozef Pavilion is no longer in use as a hospital.
In 1894 the Sint Josephs Orphanage on the Hoge Gouwe was founded in Gouda. The care of the orphans was in the hands of the Franciscan sisters. The circles of this orphanage also took the initiative to found a Roman Catholic hospital in Gouda. The Saint Joseph Pavilion was completed in 1929. The pavilion was located on the north side of the former building of the urban area of ??Gouda, the Graaf Florisweg. The pavilion housed orphans and the elderly, but was also suitable as a hospital. The new pavilion had 40 hospital beds. For the nursing of the patients an appeal was made to the Little Sisters of Saint Joseph from Heerlen.
The pavilion served as an orphanage for ten years. In 1939 the activities as an orphanage were stopped. In 1961, a separation was made between hospital activities and care for the elderly. In 1971 a new location was completed for the elderly care department, which was named Huize Savelberg after the founder of the congregation of the Little Sisters of Saint Joseph, Petrus Joseph Savelberg. The hospital continued its activities at Graaf Florisweg as the Sint Jozef Hospital.
