This painting shows the former railway bridge 'De Hef' in Rotterdam. The title refers to the figures in a circle at the bottom left of the painting.
De Hef is the popular name for the Koningshavenbrug, a railway lifting bridge over the Koningshaven in Rotterdam that has been decommissioned for train traffic since 24 September 1993. The bridge was part of the Breda - Rotterdam railway line.
The bridge was designed by engineer Pieter Joosting and opened on October 31, 1927. This bridge was the first of its kind in Western Europe.
On May 14, 1940, the bridge was heavily damaged during the bombing of Rotterdam. To make train traffic possible again, it was one of the first works of art in the destroyed city to be restored.
